Sleeping and soothing

Helping your baby go to sleep

Helping a baby to sleep on his own, without experiencing distress, can be a challenge for parents. This video shows mum going through a routine which helps baby Jordan to settle.  Encourage parents to try the following sequence:

  • Place baby in a safe sleeping position. Step away and watch for ten seconds.
  • If baby doesn’t settle, let him see your face and talk softly.
  • If baby is still unsettled, touch him softly to reassure him and gently hold his arms on his body.
  • If baby is still not soothed, give him a cuddle.
  • Repeat this routine.
